The key question always concerns which processing platform is at the heart of an application. This can vary from low-power micro-controllers via Linux-based application processors to embedded PCs running Windows. If a lot of signal processing or specific interfacing is involved, it is often decided to integrate GPU or FPGA technology. Circuits around processors and FPGAs can be complex and therefore processor modules are often used. These can be standard TOPIC modules, such as the Miami and Orlando platforms, but also third-party modules with the right quality level.

The choice of the platform is determined on the basis of the cost price and the development effort of the platform, the functionality, the desired operating system and the maintainability.
