Meet Marcela | Software Engineer at TOPIC

But who are the people behind our innovations? In our Meet Our People series, we highlight TOPIC team members in various roles across the company. For this edition, we spoke with Marcela, who joined TOPIC as a Software Engineer in 2024. She shares her experiences as an engineer, giving insight into a typical workday, the challenges she enjoys, and what makes working at TOPIC unique for her.

Why do you work at TOPIC?
It's important to me to work for a place that aligns with my personal and professional values. At TOPIC, I feel that employees matter and there's room to be yourself, which makes me even more enthusiastic about my work. It's incredible to love what you do and to feel valued while doing it

How would you describe your job, and what does your working day look like?
My daily work involves creating reliable software and maintaining existing implementations, ensuring the delivered product is of good quality in due time. It can be challenging, especially when coordinating with external stakeholders, but it's also rewarding. Our agile, fast-paced team is flexible and filled with experienced, talented people I can always count on when needed.

Which (technical) challenges do you have in your role?
I would say the ability to see the bigger picture of complex software. I work on a large project that's divided into smaller parts to keep it manageable. This means I need to understand each part and how they fit together. It’s definitely challenging, but I love it!

What makes TOPIC unique?
Among all things, I would say, the company values. People are valued and supported. Here, my work balance, health and happiness matters, and all decisions at work end up considering that, which I find amazing.

Being able to work for a company that believes in the same principles as me is really important, because in the end I feel like I am applying my skills, energy and enthusiasm into a greater good, which I already see happening. Having the peace of mind to do it while the other areas of my life are doing good is also a big plus.
