In honor of International Women's Day, we sat down with Annamarie, Marcela, and Rihab, three of our accomplished female engineers. In a field where women make up only 28% of the global tech workforce and 35% of STEM students globally, they have thrived as professionals and made significant contributions to our projects and team dynamics.
We discussed their experiences as women in tech, the reasons they chose this career path, and the unique perspectives they bring to their work. They also gave valuable advice for other women and girls looking to enter the tech world.
What inspired you to choose a career in Technology?
Rihab: “I found the work in technology challenging, powerful, always evolutionary and you will always learn new things, thus I chose to work in technology.”
Marcela: “I always liked creating, crafting, shaping my ideas into things that could be materialized in the real world. Coding is like a line of thought, a sequence of ideas that show how I think I can solve a problem, how I create a solution. So, in a way, my code and my creations are a glimpse of my mind and personality, so I leave a bit of myself in every creation. I find this very special.”
Annamarie: “I was encouraged to do anything I wanted when choosing a career. I loved maths and wanted to be able to apply this to real world problems.”
“As a woman in Tech I can…...”
Annamarie: “As a woman in Tech I can apply my knowledge with a different perspective to others in the team, ensuring a broader solution scope.”
Marcela: “I get to create solutions that help real people and real companies solve problems that, bit by bit, make the world better. It is awesome to make something with my own hands and to use pure logic, in an environment that is a whole universe separated from reality, to solve real world stuff. Working like this still looks like magic to me, even after so many years.”
Rihab: “As a woman in Tech I can be independent, explore my ideas, contribute to innovative solutions and challenge myself.”
What advice would you give other girls and woman aspiring to a career in tech?
Marcela: “Don't be afraid to choose what you want to do. And don't let the scarcity of women in this scenario scare you. We are capable of everything that we put our minds to, and we give each other strength to continue. Day by day, there will be more of us. Don't be afraid to code like a woman.”
Rihab: “If you are looking for a challenging job where you can explore various disciplines, technology is one of the choices.”
Annamarie: “Do it! Women are as important in the industry as men and should not feel reluctant to participate in it.”
As we celebrate the achievements of Annamarie, Marcela, and Rihab, we are reminded of the vital role women play in the tech industry. Their insights and experiences highlight the importance of diversity and inclusion in fostering innovation and progress.
We are also excited to announce the launch of our new series, Women@Work. In this series, we will highlight some of our female colleagues, focusing on their expertise, vision, and the unique advantages they bring as women. With International Women's Day coming up, we asked Dina Blom, our HR Manager, to kick off the series. Dina shares more about the importance of fostering an inclusive culture, the benefits of having more women join us, and how we support them in their work.
