TOPIC presents at the MedConf

woensdag 17 mei 2023

From May 23rd to May 25th, the MedConf in München takes place again. A conference with accompanying exhibition that focusses on medical software-and device development. With this year as central topics: standards and guidelines, software development and quality assurance, device development, laboratory automation, digitization, agility in medical technology and medical apps.

From TOPIC, Annamarie Stanton and Dirk van den Heuvel will present at the conference on May 25th to share their vision on the next generation medical devices: highly integrated, small form factor, connected and extremely agile. They will elaborate on design and implementation choices in relation to the latest technologies and common device requirements.

Presentation: Next generation medical devices | highly integrated, small form factor, connected and extremely agile
Medical and pharmaceutical equipment are primarily constructed around the core function of the instrument, as described by the intended use. However, to make it a useful device additional functionality is required, and these aspects can become dominant. Users need to be able to interact with the device, connections to the laboratory or hospital infrastructure are required and the handling of for example tissue or materials needs to be managed. Most of the time this involves a chemistry process, data acquisition, data processing and decimation and interpretation of results. Given the nature of most procedures, safe and secure operation is mandatory. Our experience in the medical domain learned that not-core functionality can become dominant in size, effort, and development cost, depending on the implementation choices made. The current state-of-the-art technologies require designers to adopt new implementation architectures and make different design choices, unfolding capabilities not seen before. In this presentation we will dive into a typical example of a laboratory instrument and demonstrate how the latest silicon technologies are applied to build a highly integrated instrument, covering all medical device requirements including safety and security. This gives an insight in what embedded systems are capable of nowadays and how that translates into superior products.

  • Presented by: Annamarie Stanton (System Architect) and Dirk van den Heuvel (Principal Consultant)
  • Date: Thursday, May 25th
  • Time: 13.30-14.15
  • Location: MedConf München
