More and more electronic systems find their application in distributed, networked computing architectures. Synchronizing actions using precision timing concepts is becoming increasingly common, and with that the need for very high precision time.
Wired triggering implementations are replaced by time triggered operation and time-stamped sampling. Where sub—nanosecond synchronization found its way over the years in research and academia, you now find it in various industrial applications. This development is supported by standardization efforts, like that formulated by the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol. White Rabbit, a precision timing protocol developed by CERN, was adopted by that same standard as the default High Accuracy (HA) variant.
